This course examines some established notions in art history in accordance with a non-linear and non-adaptive viewpoint. It revitalizes some static markers such as Renaissance and Baroque through negating the boundaries between them. While clarifying the generalized traits of a specific style in history, it also pays attention to certain simultaneous receptions, modifications and appropriations in other media or geographical areas. Such an approach serves to expand our perceptions and understandings of artistic creations with broader art-historical contexts. As a part of literature review, we discuss some philosophers’ and art historians’ contemplations upon specific topics. All in all, this course (1) sharpens our way of seeing and perceiving a specific style; (2) widens our scope of interpreting the coexistence or convergence of different styles.
